چکیده

When a tokamak plasma makes a transition into the good or the high confinement H mode, the edge density and pressure steepen and develop a very sharp pressure pedestal. Prediction of the height and width of this pressure profile has been actively pursued so as to provide a reliable extrapolation to future burning plasma devices. The double-Beltrami two-fluid equilibria of Mahajan and Yoshida fPhys. Plasmas 7, 635 s2000dg are invoked and extended to derive scalings for the edge pedestal width and height with plasma parameters: these scalings come out in agreement with the established semiempirical scalings. The theory predictions are also compared with limited published H-mode data and the agreement is found to be very encouraging. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. fDOI: 10.1063/1.1852468g

PSFC / JA - 05 - 46 Advances in measurement and modeling of the high - confinement - mode pedestal on the Alcator C - Mod tokamak

Edge transport barrier (ETB) studies on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak [Phys. Plasmas 1, 1511, (1994)] investigate pedestal scalings and radial transport of plasma and neutrals. Pedestal profiles show trends with plasma operational parameters such as total current IP . A ballooning-like I2 P dependence is seen in the pressure gradient, despite calculated stability to ideal ballooning modes. A simila...

Global gyrokinetic simulation of Tokamak edge pedestal instabilities.

Global electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations show the existence of near threshold conditions for both a high-n kinetic ballooning mode (KBM) and an intermediate-n kinetic version of peeling-ballooning mode (KPBM) in the edge pedestal of two DIII-D H-mode discharges. When the magnetic shear is reduced in a narrow region of steep pressure gradient, the KPBM is significantly stabilized, while th...

Edge Pedestal Control in Quiescent H-Mode Discharges in DIII-D Using Co Plus Counter Neutral Beam Injection

We have made two significant discoveries in our recent studies of quiescent H-mode (QH-mode) plasmas in DIII-D. First, we have found that we can control the edge pedestal density and pressure by altering the edge particle transport through changes in the edge toroidal rotation. This allows us to adjust the edge operating point to be close to, but below the ELM stability boundary, maintaining th...

Solitary perturbations in the steep boundary of magnetized toroidal plasma

Solitary perturbations (SPs) localized both poloidally and radially are detected within ~100 μs before the partial collapse of the high pressure gradient boundary region (called pedestal) of magnetized toroidal plasma in the KSTAR tokamak device. The SP develops with a low toroidal mode number (typically unity) in the pedestal ingrained with quasi-stable edge-localized mode (QSM) which commonly...

A simple model of intrinsic rotation in high confinement regime tokamak plasmas

A simple unified model of intrinsic rotation and momentum transport in high confinement regime H-mode tokamak plasmas is presented. Motivated by the common dynamics of the onset of intrinsic rotation and the L-H transition, this simple model combines E B shear-driven residual stress in the pedestal with a turbulent equipartition pinch to yield rotation profiles. The residual stress is the prima...
